French

“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.”

Flora Lewis

At St Pius X, we believe that exposing children to the French language fosters curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. French is taught weekly throughout Key Stage 2, providing a fun and engaging curriculum that equips children with the tools to express themselves aurally and in writing. Our aim is to provide a strong foundation that inspires a lifelong love of languages as our pupils transition to Secondary School.

Intent: Our Vision for French

Our curriculum is designed to move pupils from basic phonetic recognition to confident, purposeful communication. Our intent is for all pupils to:

  • Deepen Cultural Understanding: Explore a new way of thinking and engaging with the global community.
  • Develop Expressive Skills: Enable children to share their views, opinions, and experiences in a second language.
  • Build Linguistic Foundations: Foster the “active listening” and grammatical awareness necessary for future language learning.
  • Encourage Confidence: Provide a safe, engaging environment where children feel empowered to take risks with unfamiliar sounds and structures.

Implementation: How We Teach

We deliver a balanced curriculum that prioritises the four key pillars of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Active Listening and Oracy

From the start of Year 3, we focus on the sounds of the language. Spoken language activities underpin every lesson, ensuring that oracy is the engine of progress:

  1. Distinguishing Patterns: Pupils move from identifying single sounds to extracting detail from unfamiliar stories.
  2. Purposeful Conversation: Children engage in role-play and real-world scenarios, such as buying tickets, describing their families, or giving instructions.
  3. Rehearsal and Recall: Regular opportunities to rehearse phrases ensure that French becomes a natural tool for expression rather than a memorised list.

Written Expression

As children build confidence in their spoken French, they transition to applying this knowledge in writing. By Year 6, pupils are able to use their growing bank of vocabulary and grammatical understanding to produce increasingly detailed written descriptions and responses.

Securing Foundational Skills

We believe that language mastery is built upon a secure “bank” of knowledge that must be revisited and reinforced regularly.

Focus Area Strategy & Approach
Vital Vocabulary Taught discretely in every lesson. Children build a cumulative bank of words that increases in complexity over their four-year journey.
Phonetic Awareness Explicitly teaching children to distinguish the unique sounds and patterns of French that differ from their mother tongue.
Active Listening Developing the stamina to listen for meaning, starting with single words and progressing to complex narratives.
Grammatical Scaffolding Using structured sentence frames to support children in moving from single-word responses to full, grammatically correct sentences.

Impact: Our Outcomes

Through our engaging and structured approach, pupils at St Pius X graduate as budding linguists.

  • Confident Communicators: Our pupils possess the confidence to express themselves both aurally and in writing in a foreign language.
  • Curious Citizens: Students leave with a broadened worldview, understanding that language is a gateway to different cultures and perspectives.
  • Secondary Readiness: Our children have a secure foundation in French vocabulary and syntax, ensuring they are well-prepared for the rigours of Key Stage 3.
  • Lifelong Learners: By experiencing success in a second language early on, our pupils develop a positive disposition toward learning and a “can-do” attitude that extends beyond the French classroom.

Our commitment to high-quality language instruction ensures that every child at St Pius X leaves equipped with a “different way to think about things” and a world of new opportunities.
