Intent: Our Vision for Handwriting

Our handwriting curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils move from basic motor control to automatic, expressive writing. Our intent is for all pupils to:

Implementation: How We Teach

We follow the Letter-Join programme from Year 1 to Year 6. This provides a clear, consistent and progressive pathway that evolves as the child grows.

A Progressive Pathway

  • Year 1: The focus is on foundational accuracy – developing the correct pencil grip, posture, and precise letter formation.
  • Year 2 and Beyond: Pupils transition to a cursive style. They are taught to join letters to promote a flow that increases writing speed and efficiency.

Daily, Structured Practice

Handwriting is taught through daily sessions that utilize the Letter-Join digital resources. These sessions include:

  1. Visual Demonstrations: Interactive modeling of letter joins and sequences.
  2. Guided Practice: Teacher-led sessions to refine technique and posture.
  3. Independent Application: Pupils apply motor patterns through structured exercises.

Teachers provide consistent feedback and targeted interventions for those needing extra support with fine motor control, ensuring every learner can achieve a neat, legible hand.

Securing Foundational Skills

We place a heavy emphasis on the “physicality” of writing. For handwriting to be successful, the mechanics must become “invisible” so the child can focus entirely on composition and content.
