Promoting British Values

The Department for Education (DfE) has reinforced the need for schools to actively promote fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the Government in the Prevent Strategy in 2011 and remain a key part of preparing pupils for life in modern Britain.

At St Pius X, our Catholic ethos is rooted in the Gospel values of respect, honesty, compassion, forgiveness, mercy, community, servant leadership, equality, simplicity, justice and peace. These values guide everything we teach and promote within our school and in the wider community.

We recognise that the multi-cultural and multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom is a strength. Pupils are taught to celebrate diversity, respect difference and live harmoniously with others. Our policies and practices ensure that no one experiences discrimination or unfair treatment based on faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or background. Understanding and living by fundamental British values is an important part of preparing our pupils for life in modern Britain.

The fundamental British values promoted at St Pius X are:

Democracy

Democracy is central to life at St Pius X. Pupils experience democracy in action through school council elections where representatives are chosen by class vote. The School Council provides pupils with a genuine voice in decision-making, from shaping the school behaviour policy to influencing charitable projects.

Class discussions, circle times and pupil voice feedback further promote shared responsibility and the idea that every voice matters. Through assemblies and curriculum links, particularly in RE, PSHE and History, pupils explore fairness, justice and equality, and older pupils learn how local and national government work to protect democratic freedoms. Remembrance events reinforce the importance of safeguarding these values.

The Rule of Law

Our school upholds the importance of rules and laws which govern and protect everyone. Pupils help develop their own class rules and learn to take responsibility for their actions. Behaviour expectations are clear and consistent and Restorative Approaches are used to promote accountability and understanding.

Visits from community authorities such as the Police and Fire Service reinforce that laws exist to ensure safety and fairness. Pupils learn that discrimination is both morally wrong and illegal and that they have a duty to challenge intolerance or extremist ideas. In assemblies and lessons, we stress that everyone, adults and children alike, is equal under the law.

Individual Liberty

Within our safe and supportive environment, pupils are encouraged to make informed choices and express themselves with confidence. Through E-Safety, PSHE and pastoral support, they learn to exercise their rights and freedoms responsibly and respectfully.

Pupils are empowered to take ownership of their learning, choosing how to approach challenges, how to record their ideas and how to participate in clubs and extra-curricular opportunities. Channels such as School Council feedback and Worry Boxes allow children to share concerns or suggestions freely. Clear behaviour and anti-bullying policies help ensure that all pupils feel secure, valued and heard.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of Christian life. Jesus taught, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” At St Pius X, we nurture this principle through daily interactions, classroom culture and collective worship. Pupils learn that respect is shown not just in words but in actions through kindness, listening, teamwork and service.

Displays, assemblies and curriculum work highlight respect. Pupils regularly engage in charitable projects and community outreach, supporting local, national and global causes. These experiences foster empathy and teach that showing respect for others strengthens both our faith and our community.

Tolerance of those of Different Cultures, Faiths and Beliefs

Though St Pius X is a Catholic school, we warmly welcome pupils from all faiths and none. Tolerance and understanding are developed through RE and PSHE where pupils learn about other major world religions and explore what unites us as human beings.

Assemblies and cultural celebrations highlight key religious festivals and visitors, including parents and community representatives, who share their faith traditions and experiences. Pupils also visit places of worship such as mosques, gurdwaras and temples, deepening their appreciation of the diversity within our society. Through such experiences, children gain a strong sense of belonging and are prepared to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

Conclusion

At St Pius X, promoting British values is inseparable from living out our Catholic faith. By combining Gospel principles with practical learning, we nurture pupils who are respectful, responsible and compassionate, ready to thrive personally, socially and spiritually, and to play an active part in building a just and peaceful society.
