Mathematics
‘The best preparation for tomorrow is to do good work today.’
Elbert Hubbard
At St Pius X, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our ambition is to develop confident, curious, and capable mathematicians who can reason, problem-solve and apply their knowledge with precision.
Mathematical success begins with firm foundational knowledge. Our curriculum ensures pupils build secure foundations in number, calculation and fluency before extending their learning into increasingly sophisticated contexts.
Intent: Our Vision for Mastery
Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by the principles of mastery, aiming to ensure that all pupils:
- Build secure conceptual understanding through small, carefully sequenced steps of learning.
- Develop fluency in number and calculation to enable automaticity and confidence.
- Apply learning to reasoning and problem-solving tasks with increasing independence.
- Use precise vocabulary to articulate and explain mathematical thinking clearly.
Implementation: How We Teach
We follow the White Rose Mathematics framework to ensure rigorous coverage and progression across all year groups.
The Pedagogical Approach: “I Do, We Do, You Do”
To nurture resilience and deep confidence, our teachers use an explicit modeling cycle:
- I Do: The teacher introduces a concept and models methods clearly.
- We Do: The class works through guided examples, exploring methods collectively.
- You Do: Pupils apply learning independently through structured practice.
From Fluency to Depth
Tasks are designed to move from varied fluency to reasoning and problem-solving. This ensures pupils master the mechanics of a calculation before deepening their understanding through discussion. We supplement our core teaching with Target Your Maths and NCETM resources to provide targeted support where needed.
Securing Foundational Skills
We believe that fluency is the bedrock of all mathematical understanding. We use a variety of evidence-based strategies to ensure these skills are “locked in”:
| Key Stage | Focus & Tools |
| EYFS & KS1 | Mastering Number Programme: Focuses on number sense and visual/hands-on relationships. |
| Years 3–6 | Times Table Rockstars: Rapid recall of multiplication and division facts through engagement. |
| Whole School | CPA Approach: Using Concrete (objects), Pictorial (drawings), and Abstract (numbers) representations to ensure accessibility for all, including SEND pupils. |
Retrieval and Reflection
Regular retrieval practice is woven into daily lessons to strengthen long-term memory. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on misconceptions and explain their reasoning – both orally and in writing – to build genuine metacognition.
Impact: Our Outcomes
Through our coherent and ambitious curriculum, pupils at St Pius X graduate with:
- Fluency and Flexibility: The ability to choose the most efficient method for a task.
- Confidence and Perseverance: A “can-do” attitude when approaching complex challenges.
- Lifelong Appreciation: Viewing mathematics as a powerful tool for understanding the world.
Our pupils leave St Pius X equipped with the firm foundational knowledge and skills they need to thrive in secondary school and beyond.
