Phonics
“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”
Margaret Fuller
At St Pius X, we are resolute in our belief that almost all children can learn the phonetic code. Reading is not an innate skill; it is a complex process that must be directly and systematically taught. We waste no time, beginning intensive phonics instruction within the first few weeks of a child starting school to ensure the world of literacy opens to them as early as possible.
Intent: Our Vision for Phonics
We aim to provide a robust foundation in early reading that eliminates the “learning gap” before it can begin. Our intent is built upon:
- High Expectations: We believe every child can become a fluent reader through clear, progressive teaching.
- Systematic Fidelity: Following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme with absolute consistency.
- Success-Driven Learning: Ensuring children only encounter books containing sounds they have been taught, instilling immediate confidence and a “can-do” attitude.
- Teacher-Led Expertise: Recognizing that the teacher is responsible for the learning of all pupils, supported by highly trained staff who understand the 140 letter-sound combinations required for fluency.
Implementation: How We Teach
Phonics at St Pius X is intensive, daily and multi-sensory. We follow a structured order of sounds, moving the whole class forward together while providing immediate “keep-up” support for those who need it.
The “Little Wandle” Approach
- Daily Sessions: Every child in Reception and Year 1 receives at least one dedicated daily phonics lesson.
- No “Consonant Blends”: We teach children to decode individual phonemes (e.g., /s/ /t/ /e/ /p/) rather than memorizing clusters like “st,” reducing the cognitive burden.
- Multi-Sensory Learning: While remaining faithful to the systematic order, we use creative, tactile, and visual approaches – especially in the Early Years.
- Regional Accuracy: Staff present sounds in the children’s regional accent to avoid confusion during the blending process.
Home-School Partnership
We do not expect parents to “teach” their children to read; rather, we provide the tools for successful practice. We provide two types of books:
- Reading Practice Book: Closely matched to their current phonic stage to build fluency and independence.
- Sharing Book: A high-quality text from our library for adults to read to the child, developing a love for stories and rich vocabulary.
Securing Foundational Skills
We use rigorous assessment to track every child’s progress, ensuring that foundational knowledge is secure before moving to more complex phases.
| Year Group | Phonic Phase Expectation | Key Focus |
| Reception | Phase 2, 3 & 4 | Sound discrimination, oral blending, and securing GPCs (Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences). |
| Year 1 | Phase 4 & 5 | Mastering alternative spellings and preparing for the Phonics Screening Check. |
| Year 2 | Phase 5 Review | Deepening understanding of rules before transitioning to the National Curriculum spelling strand. |
| KS2 | Intervention | Intensive “Rapid Catch Up” for any child who has not yet met the Phonics Screening standard. |
Impact: Our Outcomes
The impact of our phonics curriculum is seen in children who don’t just “bark at print,” but who read with genuine understanding and speed.
- Fluent Decoders: By mastering 40+ phonemes and their various graphemes, children read most words quickly and accurately without overt blending.
- Linguistic Mastery: Children develop a “subconscious reader voice,” understanding pace, flow, and rhythm through the modeling of “Real Books” and nursery rhymes.
- Ready for the World: Our pupils leave Key Stage 1 with the ability to decode accurately, allowing them to access the increasingly challenging vocabulary of the Key Stage 2 curriculum and beyond.
Through our “Success Breeds Success” philosophy, we ensure that every child at St Pius X gains the essential tools to be a leader of their own learning.
